Third day on the road.

Lise and I spent some time discussing our route and decided that we were going to modify our trip somewhat by travelling further south than originally intended. By taking I-90 we would be able to travel to Rapid City, South Dakota and from there visit Mt. Rushmore. This is something we have both wanted to do for quite some time and who knows when we might come by this way again. So, we modified our maps and started off in the morning heading south along Lake Michigan and connecting up to I-90 just west of Oshkosh, Michigan. The roads were great, the traffic was light, the speed limits were moderate and the weather was summery. Lise commented that she has really liked the roads we have travelled on so far, so it looks like I’ll have to try to find more of the same. The traffic on I-90 was not as heavy as I remember I-40 being last year. Hope that holds true for the next few days as well.

We stopped at a campground near Onalaska, Wisconsin. It is the Veteran’s Memorial Park and Campground in West Salem, It doesn’t have sewer hookup at each site but it does have a dump station and for us that was good enough. The picture of the tank is in this campground. We’d definitely stay here again. We travelled 407 miles today.

Crossing the border... again.

We continued travelling on highway 17 to Sault Ste. Marie in preparation for our entry into the U.S. We parked in a Mall parking lot so we could walk back to the last Tim Horton’s we would see until we are back in Canada. I think the picture we took of the coach in the parking lot is the first one with the car attached.

After filling up at Timmy’s we crossed the bridge into the States. There was a freighter going through the locks between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan so Lise took a picture from the bridge. It took about a half an hour to get through the line up at Customs. We had to give up a bunch of Clementine oranges we had forgotten were in the fridge. Oh well – we bought more at our first Wal Mart stop.

It was still early (about 11:30 a.m.), and the weather was nice, so we continued driving to see how far we could get before calling it a day. The roads were much better than the previous day. We travelled on Hwy. 28 to Marquette in the State of Michigan, on the southeast side of Lake Superior. We spent the night in the Wal Mart parking lot. We travelled 330 miles today.

First Travel Day

We are on the road. We're sad to be leaving family and friends but looking forward to spending time with our son Adam, his wife Leah, and our grandson David.

Day one was pretty uneventful. It did not rain so that was a blessing :) We planned on stopping at Sudbury, preferably at a Wal Mart but couldn't find it so we continued down the road to Nairn Centre which sports a Esso Truck Stop. We're about 270 km. from Sault Ste. Marie where we hope to cross over to the US for the main portion of our trip.

I don't know if it's our big rig or not but I do think that there are many parts of the Trans Canada Hwy. 17 that are very rough, it hasn't been twinned, and it doesn't reflect very well on what is supposed to be the main highway through Canada. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have made major strides on their highways, with help from the Government of Canada. I think it's time for Ontario to jump on board as well.

Our new blog site.

Welcome to our new blog. We've moved our blog to this site because it's FREE. Our old blog using My Trip Journal costs $100.00 for a one-year subscription and it was time to renew. It just made sense to switch. We just have to figure out how to move around on this one so bear with us. Unfortunately, this one doesn't have the option to send an email to everyone subscribing to our blog that we have updated it. So you will have to get used to checking it on your own once in a while. Sorry! ;-)

We are spending the day at home just watching TV. It's cloudy and has rained off and on all day. The highlight for today is that Renee and Liam (our grandson) are coming over for supper. Marc will be gone all day to a stag party for his cousin Jordan who is getting married in August.

We are just a few days away from hitting the road again. Westward ho....
